How to Care for Your Automatic Watch: The Complete Guide

An automatic watch is a living mechanism. Well-maintained, it can accompany you for decades. Here's everything you need to know to take care of your A★Star watch — or any automatic watch.

1. Daily Wear, The Best Maintenance

An automatic watch winds itself thanks to wrist movements. The more you wear it, the better it performs. If you don't wear it for several days, it will stop — this is normal. You just need to wind it manually via the crown by making about twenty clockwise turns, with the crown pulled out to position 1.

2. Protecting Your Watch Daily

  • Avoid shocks: a mechanical movement is sensitive to violent impacts. Remove your watch for intense sports activities or manual labor.
  • Keep it away from magnets: magnetic fields can disrupt the movement and affect its accuracy. Avoid placing your watch near speakers, Bluetooth speakers, or magnetic bag clasps.
  • Respect water resistance: your A★Star is water resistant to 5 ATM, meaning it can withstand splashes and rain. However, avoid diving and hot showers — steam can damage the seals over time.

3. Cleaning and Routine Maintenance

Regularly wipe your watch with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. To clean a metal bracelet, a soft toothbrush and lukewarm soapy water are sufficient. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.

For a leather strap, avoid water and moisture. A little leather cream applied occasionally will extend its lifespan.

4. Servicing: How Often?

An automatic movement like the NH35 requires a complete overhaul every 5 to 7 years under normal use. This overhaul includes disassembling, cleaning, lubricating, and regulating the movement. It's an investment that guarantees the longevity of your watch.

Outside of scheduled overhauls, if you notice an abnormal loss of accuracy or a reduced power reserve, do not hesitate to contact a watchmaker.

5. Storage

If you are storing your watch for an extended period, wind it manually before storing and place it flat in its box, away from light and humidity. Avoid significant temperature variations.

For collectors who own several automatic watches, a watch winder will keep them constantly in motion.
