NH35 movement: the mechanical heart of your A★Star watches
An automatic watch is pure mechanics. No battery, no power cell—just a spring, gears, and a rotor that winds with the movement of your wrist. The movement is the heart of the watch. At A★Star, that heart is called the NH35.
What is an automatic movement?
An automatic movement runs on the kinetic energy of your body. A rotor oscillates with your movements and continuously winds the mainspring. As long as you wear the watch regularly, it won't stop.
It is a mechanical object in a digital world. Every beat is visible, audible, real. Many enthusiasts believe that a watch that doesn't beat mechanically isn't really a watch.
Why the NH35?
The NH35 is made in Japan under strict industrial quality standards. It is one of the most renowned automatic movements in its category—used by hundreds of manufacturers around the world for one simple reason: it works, and it lasts.
24 jewels Jewels are friction bearings used at the movement's most heavily stressed contact points. They reduce mechanical wear and extend the caliber's lifespan. 24 jewels is a remarkable number for this price point.
41-hour power reserve Once wound, your watch will run for approximately 41 hours without being worn. You can take it off in the evening and find it still running the next day, ready to go. That means you can leave it aside for a day without having to set it.
Controlled accuracy The NH35 allows for a tolerance of -10 to +30 seconds per day under normal conditions. We enforce a tolerance of -15 to +15 seconds during our timegrapher testing—accuracy that exceeds the manufacturer's specifications.
Transparent sapphire case back The back of our cases lets you see the NH35 in action. The oscillating rotor, the gears, the mechanical architecture—a spectacle you can enjoy every time you turn over your watch.
Automatic vs. quartz: which should you choose?
Quartz is more accurate in the short term—a few seconds per month compared to a few seconds per day for an automatic. But quartz needs a battery. An automatic needs movement. And an automatic has a soul that quartz does not.
